Some Beautiful Scenes

Although it has been unusually cold by Dutch standards since we got back, it has provided some nice photo taking opportunities.

I woke up on Thursday morning to a beautiful frost covered scene. I started taking pictures long before it was really light enough to show the beauty of the day but persistence paid off and I like this shot. It is the scene I look out on from my sewing machine. The frost lasted till late afternoon so it was a beautiful view all day.

The canals in the neighborhoods have all frozen over solid now and so it has provided lots of fun for kids and adults alike. This canal is a block from our house. I was told that they have set up big spotlights here for a couple of nights so that people can go out and skate and sled after work and dinner.

I wondered why there were chairs out on the ice but it soon became obvious that it was to help those learning to skate. Of course it may also be useful for parents who want to just sit and watch their kids.

The canal lacks a Zamboni but makes up for it with young volunteers to keep the ice in good condition.

This grandma was a really good skater and she and her grandchildren all seemed to be having a great time. One end of the canal is used strickly for skating and hockey while the other end is a great place to sled out onto. The little wooden sleds work great. From the little hill they can get enough speed to get all the way to the other side of the ice.

Dennis got this picture this afternoon at 4:00. To the east a full moon and to the west a very pick sunset.

What would a look at Dutch scenery be without a windmill or two?!
